Janina vs. the Hiccup

As I write this I am plagued with painful hiccups. I started snacking on some pecans and before I knew it I was hiccuping painful hiccups. Whenever hiccups attack it is a painful and loud ordeal. Randomly whenever I drink soda or carbonation I get hiccups. Sprite causes the worst of my carbonation hiccups. Needless to say, I don't drink soda often because of the pain it causes. I also get hiccups whenever I eat deli turkey straight out of the packaging. If I eat it in a sandwich I never get hiccups, but as I make my sandwich and absentmindedly grab a piece of turkey I am quickly reminded why I tend to buy ham or roast beef for our sandwiches. When these hiccups attack I try to get rid of them using every folklore associated with hiccups, but my hiccups last until my diaphragm is exhausted from the continual spasms. Hopefully pecans won't be a hiccup causing food because we just bought a huge bag from Costco.

What causes hiccups: From a physical standpoint, hiccups are caused by uncontrolled spasms of the diaphragm. Each spasm causes quick intake of breath, which makes a hiccup. The phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm, is directly responsible for these spasms. From a physiological standpoint, the medical community has not reached a consensus on why hiccups occur. One thing doctors agree on is that hiccups do not seem to serve any useful purpose. -Wisegeek.com

  1. I've also been plagued with hiccups my entire life. I think the culprit is milk or dairy for me though. I've tried all the outrageous cures but only one thing works for me: lemon juice. My husband told me to drink straight lemon juice, a big swig and I swear it works like a charm. Don't know if it would work in your case though but its worth a shot.
